Why Are Wisdom Teeth Often Removed?
Sometimes referred to as the “third molars”, when wisdom teeth develop, they often come in sideways or only partially emerge, get trapped inside the gums, or come up beneath other teeth. All of these issues can lead to pain, infection and damage to the jaw or other teeth. That’s why it’s important to have them evaluated and if necessary, removed.
When Should They Be Removed?
Sometimes it’s best to have wisdom teeth removed when you’re a young adult. This can lower the risk of complications and shorten healing time. Some say the best time to remove them is when the roots of the wisdom teeth are two-thirds formed.
As an adult, often they are in the way for restorations to be placed on adjacent second molars and are difficult to keep clean and healthy.
What Can Patients Do To Prepare?
An evaluation with the proper x-ray, usually a panorex, is needed to determine if removal of the wisdom teeth is recommended. It is also important to make sure your schedule is clear with important events or school in case there are complications that occur after the teeth are removed.
