CAVITY PREVENTION IS A CONTINUOUS QUEST. Fortunately, there are many tools available to help fight tooth decay. The obvious ones including brushing, flossing and regular checkups. Another great way to fight cavities is the application of topical fluoride treatments.
Fluoride Helps Prevent Cavities And Strengthens Teeth
Every day, each tooth’s enamel layer gains and loses minerals. Too much demineralization can lead to weakened teeth and increased cavity risk. Fluoride treatments have two major objectives. First, they make teeth more resistant to plaque and acid attacks. And second, they help teeth remineralize more quickly. The in office fluoride varnish that we use is gently applied to the teeth in all children after their cleaning is completed. This is usually done until they have graduated from high school and will continue if they are decay susceptible until they are decay free for several years. Many adults that have decay problems are also introduced to fluoride varnish treatments. We also encourage highly susceptible patients to use a prescription toothpaste or rinse which contain a higher concentration of fluoride than the usual over the counter pastes or rinses.
